Why are the windows so important?

The stained glass windows in the sanctuary at St John's depict Our Lady (as Our Lady Seat of Wisdom) flanked by St John the Evangelist (right) and St John the Baptist (left) in the central lights, with a kneeling monk/donor. The artist and studio used to manufacture the windows was William Wailes of Newcastle.

History

The windows are an important and interesting part of the history of our church.

Spiritual

Stained glass helps to lift our hearts and minds to God when we come to pray and worship.

Legacy

We wish to hand on to those who come after us the beauty of the church that we have received.

So, what has been done?

Wooden Frames

Stonework

The cracks and holes in the glass have been repaired and the lead that holds the glass together has been replaced.

The wooden frames in which the glass sits were in very poor condition and most of them have been re-made.

The stone work surrounding the windows was moving and crumbling away, and in need of repair and restoration.
